No women's hockey in the Olympics?

I read somewhere that they considered excluding women's hockey from the next Olympics, because some teams are so much better than the others. Meaning, there's no real competition taking place. To me, that makes no sense. Not when "sports" like curling and fucking BOB-SLEIGH are included in the Olympics. I don't watch women's hockey, but I would definitely watch that over bob-sleigh. They call it a sport, when it's clearly just four retards in some form of aerodynamic metal condom, trying desperately not to die. And the team that came closest to dying, without actually doing so, wins. You know what? Forget what I said. You can scrap women's hockey in the next Olympics, but only if you replace it with Russian Roulette.

I remember reading that Ellen Von Unwerth(At least I think it was her) once said that it was way harder for her generation to make it as photographers. To me, that is bona fide bullshit. Granted, it was harder getting your images out there without the internet, but the competition was way less stiff, considering that the advertising market was moving away from illustrations and into photography. Plus, with today's snapshots making into Vogue, who even needs a light meter anymore? I know I don't use one. I'm not saying it was much easier then, I'm just saying that was a stuck-up thing to say. And I haven't even mentioned the fact that this woman was a model for 10 years before even venturing into fashion photography. Gee, I wonder if she had any connections in the fashion industry after 10 years on a runway? Von Unwerth is definitely a legit photographer, but that was still a dumb statement. Speaking of dumb, these are five photographers that should have known better:

5. Hedi Slimane - One of the greatest menswear designers decided to take about one thousand steps back and become a bad photographer. Everyone likes a challenge, I guess.
4. Mario Testino - I just think it's boring.
3. Karl Lagerfeld - Some people should just stick to what they know. His pictures have less character than a gold fish.
2. Rankin - His pictures make me want to eat my own head, just so I can't ever see them again.
1. David LaChappelle - Unlike Tim Walker, who uses props to create dream-like scenarios, David LaChappelle's pictures are just tacky and unattractive. Plus, he uses celebrities to create shock value, a manoeuvre clearly engineered to cover up for his total lack of talent.

The good thing about the internet, is that it's really easy finding cool photos. I could find 5 new, talented people every time I go on the internet, if I wanted to. Here are some cool photographers that I've stumbled across(including the one at the top of the post):

Now, I don't want all you girls to misinterpret this post, but sometimes a man just has to show that he is...well, the man. Thus, I travelled to Stockholm, in order to find a suitable adversary in my quest to prove, once and for all, that men invented rock n' roll. I didn't have to search for very long. Actually, it just so happened that my nemesis came to me.

She was indeed a fine specimen within the much appreciated category of Homo Sapiens Femina, which intimidated me at first. However, I refused to let fear take over. Countless times, men have fallen victim to their looks, their intoxicating smell, and their snake-like charm. But this was my time. I was going to prevail. Thus, the fight started...

I quickly realized that this was no ordinary battle. This was a battle of minds, and sheer terror rose up within me when she displayed magnificent tactical skills. How could this be? Men have waged war for countless generations, yet it seemed as if she had been there watching the whole time. As if she had idly stood by, gently smirking while we slaughtered everyone around us, desperately trying to prove the value of our libido. And before I knew it, she kicked me in the nuts.

However, men have not become one of the most famous genders for nothing. I knew I could take her, I simply had to use my significantly larger brain and out-think her. Then it came to me. As clear as day, suddenly, I had a plan. In one quick motion, I got up on my feet and the fight was back on. And this time, I knew her weakness...

Unfortunately, that did not help. God damn it.

Why did I only just now find out that Gorillaz are releasing a new album? Guests include Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, De La Soul & LOU REED. I have been an avid fan of Damon Albarn for as long as I can remember. Even though Pulp's best songs are clearly stronger(Disco 2000 > Girls & Boys), Blur had a much wider spectrum of songs. Damon Albarn is clearly a genious. Anyway, this is the first single released, entitled "Stylo", along with a brief tribute to Damon Albarn. Ace.

People that spend a lot of money on their weddings, are everything that's wrong with the world. I'm not against marriage as such; If two monkey retards need judicial confirmation of their delusions, I'm not one to object. After all, it does not have a direct impact on my life. If it did, I would not be a photographer. I would be a marriage monkey retard bounty hunter.

Seriously, who the fuck can eat a cake that size? It's bigger than most Japanese cars. If you MUST invite 200 people to your dumb circus, tell them to bring their own food? Make a cardboard band, then pay one DJ instead of 11 "musicians", and distribute disposable cameras to random people at the wedding. I've said this before: There's no need for you to pay a non-creative moron 4 000 dollars to take pictures of shit that he doesn't care about, just because he owns a digital SLR.

Obviously, one could argue that wedding money should be put to better use, to help less fortunate people, but that part is not what pisses me off. I don't flatter myself to think that I have the right to pass that kind of judgment, since I don't donate to charity either. What pisses me off, is that the spectacle of weddings is so tacky and stupid. People dress the same, use the same locations, eat the same things. The nearest form of creativity would be ties that don't match. And that would never happen. A 5 000 dollar wedding dress could easily be compared to a
5 000 dollar condom. You use it the same amount of times, and if you're a marriage monkey retard, you'll probably pass it on to your children. My point is: It doesn't matter how much money you spend on your wedding, people will still have a blast. So will you.

To be honest, I don't really mind jokes that involve my race. Or any other race. However, most people fail to see the distinct difference between "jokes that involve race" and "racist jokes". See, jokes that involve race are smart and on point. Racist jokes are just tacky and unattractive. I'm not even offended by the "race" part, they're more of an insult to my intelligence. I'm offended because the idiot in front of me, thought that I would appreciate something that was clearly below mine, and all rational people's integrity.

Obviously, different people find different things to be funny or smart, but I can only speak for myself, for the same obvious reason. As the listener and possibly the target, you have a responsibility as well. You have to feel out the vibe of the joke, and act accordingly. If the joke is indeed a bit racist, I still don't feel the need to instantly point that out in front of everyone, thus causing a scene. If you do feel the need to say something, be tactical and say it to the person afterwards. That way, you point out the fact that you were offended, without making them feel stupid. I agree, some people deserve to be made fools of sometimes, but if you do choose that line of action, you should know that you're hardly converting anyone. You're placing yourself above everyone else, by publicly announcing the inferiority of that joke. Nobody likes, or respects, people that do that. It just makes you look like a snob.

You also have to consider the fact that maybe the joke wasn't even meant to be racist. Maybe the person just didn't know better. If that's the case, I definitely don't feel the need to get angry. It's like getting mad at a monkey for cheating at chess. It's not like the monkey is evil, he just doesn't know the rules.

I'm just saying, you don't have to get offended every time someone tells a dumb joke involving race. Porn does not necessarily have to be porn, until you start jerking off to it. I want to believe that things like racism have changed for the better, with the help of calm, rational people who tried understanding why a certain problem exists, and then finding the appropriate solution for it. You can't force people to think like you, simply by yelling at them. You can try, but I'm pretty sure it'll have the opposite effect. I guess what I'm trying to say is: If someone in your vicinity tells a stupid, tacky, racist joke, don't start jerking off in front of everyone. It can get awkward.

I moved into my new place and I am now an official Swedish resident again. I must say, it feels pretty damn good to be in a country where shit actually functions properly. I now have a wash mashine, a balcony, furniture and a proper bathroom. Such luxuries are completely new to me. Also, I'm going to London on January 6th, and I still don't have a place to stay, so if you know anyone that might be willing to house a nice Swedish-Sri Lankan boy for a couple of days, feel free to holler. 10 favourite albums of the 2000's

My friend just wrote a post about the fact that an actual decade is coming to an end. I hadn't thought about it before, but I think it might be true. She then proceeded to list her 10 favourite albums of this past decade, and you all know what I think about lists. They're pretty much the best thing ever, so I figured I'd do the same.

It wasn't until after I had started considering my options, that I realized how few great albums there are from this past decade? I realized how much the 2000's have been about great songs, rather than great albums. Some people might be offended because there's only one hip-hop album, but what exactly makes you think there should be more? Party hip-hop is stupid and conscious hip-hop is beyond boring. So, this is my top 10:

10. Beirut - Gulag Orkestar (2005)
I can't work and listen to music at the same time. I really wish I could. I can't even retouch or edit while listening to music. With the exception of a few, of course. Zach Condon's miserable wailing is one of the few things I can endure when I have to focus on something else. As such, I've listened to this album more than a few times since it came out.

9. N.E.R.D - In Search of... (2001)
The only hip-hop album on this list. I like it because it's actually funny, but to be honest, I've mainly included it for one reason: It might be the only hip-hop album that I can listen to in its entity, without thinking half-way through: "My God, this is so monotonous and and every second spent listening to this album is a second I will never get back." In short, this album is witty, original and amazing.

8. The Hives - Veni Vidi Vicious (2000)
I actually didn't listen to this album when it came out, but I've listened to it every week for a long time now. This album actually makes me feel cooler, just from listening to it. Even though nothing could be further from the truth.

7. The Streets - Original Pirate Material (2002)
The beats are awkward, you can't really relate to or understand what they're talking about, but for a while, I couldn't stop listening. Again, albums that are witty always make a strong impression on me.

6. AIR - Talkie Walkie (2004)
One of my favourite bands ever. Alone in Kyoto, Cherry Blossom Girl, Surfing On A Rocket, Alpha Beta Gaga. The list of great songs can be made very long. Maybe not very long, since the album only has 10 songs, but you know what I mean.

5. The Strokes - Is This It? (2001)
It might be a bit outdated at this point, but this is still the album that made this kind of music okay in my book. Whereas you can't do anything to music such as Drum N Bass, you can do everything to this album; study, party, make out, kill yourself etc etc.

4. Kings Of Convenience - Riot On An Empty Street (2004)
Me and Linus spent our entire high-school period listening to this album, along with the one listed at number two. It's one of those albums where I know all the lyrics, but I have no idea how.

3. Radiohead - Kid A (2000)
If there is one person in the world who's better than Zac Condon or Anthony Hegarty at impersonating a dying whale , it's Thom Yorke. OK Computer is better, but since that came out in '97, I had to choose the next best thing. And this album is still a 10/10. OK Computer is a 24/10.

2. The Knife - Deep Cuts (2003)
This album is probably the one that made the strongest impression on me during the 2000's, and it could just as well have been number one. Every single song is amazing. I wanted to have "Silent Shout" on this list as well, but I felt that might be a bit excessive.

1. Daft Punk - Discovery (2001)
Probably the best album of electronic music ever? Future ones included?

I swear, if ONE person mentions Da Carter III, I'm moving to Mongolia and I'm never coming back. EVER.

This is me looking like an idiot at a shoot I did for Nylon over a year ago. And I'm not that small, the perspective is distorted, okay? Good. I'm going back to Sweden on Friday, then to London from January 6-12th, and then I'll be back in Berlin for a shoot a week or so after that. I'm excited about that one, it's going to be pretty sweet. I never understood people that buy small, ugly, insignificant dogs. The thing that bothers me about small dogs, is that they're jumpy. All things that are jumpy are annoying. People hate jumpy people, so why would you get a jumpy dog? I understand that small dogs are less work, but if you want less work, why don't you get a cat instead? At least they're aesthetically pleasing, something that partially makes up for their total lack of personality. Obviously, fashion people buy small dogs or cats, for the exact reason I just mentioned. When you choose a pet, based on the fact that you both lack personality, it might be time to re-evaluate and make some form of change. It makes sense to me.

Anyway, take Pugs, for instance. In what other instances do people want to pay a lot of money for defect goods? I thought defect goods were supposed to be free, or at least cheap? 800 dollars for something defect is not cheap. It is common knowledge that Pugs are a sad, biological failure. I'm not saying they suck, which they do, but it just seems like such a shitty deal to me. See, this is were I need your help. Can someone please explain to me why I should buy this sorry excuse for a dog:

I started this blog little over 2 years ago in New York. Back then, the blog was called Chasin The Banana. One year after I started the blog, I changed the name, since Chasin The Banana sounds totally gay. I wouldn't mind being labeled as a gay person, it's just that I'm not gay. So, I decided to change the name. By that time, Charles had entered my group of friends, so Chasin The Banana(C.T.B) became Charles The Bear.

To be honest, I have no idea how many readers I actually have, since I've never checked. See, if the number turned out to be more than I expected, I'd probably feel pressure to write in a certain way, and if it turned out that nobody reads this crap, I'd probably just stop posting. That being said, today I realized that I never told you guys about how the character Charles the Bear came into being, and I feel like there are inquisitive minds out there that might be curious, so here it goes:

Charles the Bear: Genesis First Blood II

Once upon a time, one whole year ago in London, two Swedish boys were sharing, not only a room, but they also had to share a very small bed. That kind of intimacy between friends is not only questionable, it's also kind of scary.

London was a strange, yet not a very complex city. Days in London did not consist of day and night, like in other cities. Days in London consisted of two other important parts of human existence. "Work" and "Being shitfaced". No other activities were socially accepted.

Since the gang living in Flat 9 Dresden House were a bit lazy, they mostly stayed at home, indulging in many different kinds of adventurous, sophisticated activities.

Some more legit than others.

The gang was getting along very well, living in a dazed, yet fun state, constantly traveling between different parts of their own apartment. And even though London seemed to have the whole package; great weather, excellent food, and decent prices, something was still missing.

And so, the boys set out on a quest to find the missing link. Kind of like in that movie Highlander, they scoured the far corners of the Earth, yet nothing really cool was found. That is actually nothing like the movie Highlander. After careful consideration, the boys did the only rational thing. They went on Ebay.

They found a world full of horrific tales and atrocities. Did you know that in China, thousands of girl bears are brutally murdered, often times by drowning, simply because they were born female? The Swedish boys were shocked. Something had to be done. They had to stand up for all the mistreated young bears out there.

A month or so later, the boys were relaxing in their couch, indulging in a furious game of Mortal Combat. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door...

And the rest, my friends, is what we like to call history.

Obviously, I'm all for such a thing as an "Entertainment industry", but sometimes it just gets to be too ridiculous. Now, most people know who Aaron Carter is. In 1997, Aaron Carter released his first album, simply entitled "Aaron Carter". Carter was 10 years old at the time. Since we're used to this kind of thing, that does not appear to be odd. But when you look at the song titles, and content of the songs, the whole thing becomes extremely dumb. Remember the hit single from the album, called "Crazy little party girl"? Crazy.little.party.girl. Really? It might just be me, but I'm very confused about what a 10-year old, crazy little party girl does. Does she flash her non-existent boobs? Does she drink herself stupid off alchohol that she can't get anywhere? Does she have promiscuous sex? All things that come to mind are very disturbing. I'm assuming "crazy" implies dancing vividly, giggling like a retard and running around a lot, but isn't that something all 10-year olds do? In any case, I'm not following.

Or what about this one? This is 12-year old child star, Amy Diamond's song "What's in it for me?". It's also pretty dumb. The sentence leading up to the chorus is "I'm not a perfect little girl, but I should get what I deserve, and I refuse to be your mother". This sentence could mean two things:

1. This 12-year old girl is dating someone who should be able to take care of himself, but isn't, thus forcing her to act like his mother and caretaker. For that to be valid, he'd at least have to be 18 years old, since nobody demands that you take care of yourself before that age. So, what we've got here is an 18 year old dating a 12 year old. How romantic.

2. She's dating a boy of similar age, who just can't get his shit together. He goes back and forth, he's unsure of what he wants, and he just keeps messing with her mind. I just became a lot uncooler, since I wasn't even remotely interested in romantic mindfucking at that age. Or any kind of fucking, for that matter. I just wanted to play soccer.

So, miss Amy Diamond, I guess your question still remains to be answered. What is in it for you? Well, if you're dating an 18 year old, teen pregnancy is invevitably in the cards for you. And if you're dating a 12-year old mindfucker, again, teen pregnancy is probably in it for you. Have fun with that. Hey, what if it's a song about abortions?

This whole thing has made me realize what my next project should be. I'm going to write a book of poetry, called "Is it legal?" The book is meant to put emphasis on all the forbidden love out there. Here's a sneak peak:

We currently do not have any furniture in our apartment, which is why I'm eating pasta on the floor. It's almost becoming somewhat of a theme. Or "följetong", as we would say in Swedish. I don't know what the Sri Lankan word for theme is. That is why we have google, people.

Also, I've been thinking about New York lately. I have no desire to move there now, but it's always been my ambition to move there at some point, at least. Life there is too intense for what I'm after right now. And right now, I don't feel like living in a city where people don't hang out during the day. I'd like to think that there are other things to do but work and party. Especially when 98 % of the parties consist of standing around, trying to be be cooler and caring less about shit than everyone else. At least on Manhattan. So, what age shall we say then? Maybe 26? 28? 32? To be honest, I'll probably move to New York when I'm under the faux impression that I'm at my peak in life, and then I'll leave again because I'll realize that I actually don't want any part of it.

Until then, I'm just going to continue watching Charlie in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia". He is, without a doubt, my favorite character right now.

Let me tell you about how messed up my laptop is: The CD-drive doesn’t work, the computer needs to be plugged into the wall at all times, I have to move the mouse constantly if I want the internet to work, and the following keys don’t work: A, Z, CAPS LOCK and Tab. Oh, and I saved the best one for last. This stupid computer won’t let me empty my own trashcan, because I do not have ”sufficient priviligies to perform that action”. What the fuck does that mean? I bought the computer. If I don’t have sufficient priviligies, then who does? Is there a person out there who’s unaware of the fact that now only he has the sufficient priviligies to empty the trashcan on my computer? Do I need to set off on some sort of quest to find this person? I’m telling you, it’s like the Sword in the fucking Stone. King Arthur, if you’re reading this, I need your help pulling the sword out of my trashcan, please.

I honestly don’t get it. Did my computer just wake up one day and decided, ”nu-uh, you’ve lost all priviligies to this body”? I've never encountered such defiance in my own home. It's quite shocking. And this raises all kind of weird questions for me. Was I a bad owner? Did I not treat it right? I always made sure there was a fresh power supply nearby, I always gave it the best new software, and I bought a case to keep it warm. Sure, I might have smacked it around a bit when it didn’t do what I told it to, but I never took it too far. All I ever asked in return for taking care of it, was that I got to play around with it a little bit after a hard day at work. Is that so bad? Many people will probably say yes, but I bet all those people have young, hot office-computers that they can play with, thus relieving them of everyday stress.

Well, in any case, I’ve had enough. If anyone wants to take my belligerent, ungrateful, dumbass computer off my hands, feel free. Because I’m fucking out .

Ever since I can remember, I've been taking Polaroids. Now, most of you will think that means I've always had a Polaroid-camera. That is not the case. I'm just bad at remembering things that happened before 2006. Especially since my life before high-school was pretty much the most boring, shitty, inbred existence ever. Now, I have hundreds of old Polaroids lying around, and I really want to post them, but I haven't gotten around to scanning them all. If you've read this blog for a while, you'll probably recognize most of these, but I thought all the new readers might enjoy them. I hate the fact that I need to point this out, but yes, these are actual polaroids. They are not an online program that adds a white border to your photographs, so you don't have to pay the extra money that polaroids cost.

Remember when tv used to be fun? You know, splendid shows like 90210, Melrose Place, Sunset Beach, etc etc. They're brilliant. To me, they could almost be compared to Kafka, in the sense that nothing ever really happens, but every chapter is still every bit as intriguing and well written as the last. Anyway, today I finally figured out what those epic shows are actually about. They're not about nothing, in fact, that couldn't be further from the truth. If you think about it the next time you watch one of them, you'll realize it, too.

I know the shows are meant to portray ordinary people, who always manage to get themselves into tricky, yet exciting situations. That's what you're supposed to think. Maybe that's what the script writers think, too. But I know the truth. These shows are about a very specific, ancient type of people, that have only appeared a select few times throughout history. I'm talking about "people who don't walk straight into a room, but for some reason, stop for a couple of minutes just around the corner, to listen if their name is being mentioned in the other room, so that they can hear things that they would be better off not knowing". Those people.

I mean, who does that? Who stops for a while outside every room, to listen if their name is being mentioned. Since this happens all the time in every episode, it's impossible that it just happens by chance. I mean, the characters have to play the odds somehow. Don't get me wrong, I love all shows mentioned above, but they're supposed to be about normal people. And by "normal", I don't mean boring, I mean "not insane". How you'd even pitch a concept like this to a producer is beyond me.

"New shows. Brainstorming-time, come on."
"Sir, I have an idea that I think could be great."
"What is it?"
"Well, you know how, when you enter a room, you kind of just enter? Or maybe even knock?"
"Yes."
"Well, what if you didn't?"
"Didn't what?"
"Didn't just enter rooms. You stopped outside every single room to hear if anyone is saying bad things about you."
"Why would I do that? That's creepy.
"That's what makes the show unique, sir!"
"Wow, that sounds pretty dumb. Continue."

We all know where they went from there.

Please let us pay you to shoot something you don't care about.

I don't have anything against the concept of marriage. You know, you get everything down on paper, you get to announce your love to the world, and you get to throw a huge party where everyone pretend like things last forever. It's pretty cute, actually. What I fail to understand, is why people's cerebral capabilities seem to greatly devolve, whenever their wedding is coming up. Do you know how much money people spend on weddings? It makes me genuinely angry when I hear people talk about it. Especially since you always hear people talk about it, as if it's a good thing to spend as much as possible. It might just be me, but I'd like to think that people get married because they are in love, not because they share the same monetary retardation. Even cutting costs in half, you could still throw a magnificent party, you just have ditch some of the abundant crap. More specifically, I'm talking about the concept of "Wedding photographers", aka the biggest bullshitters in any hemisphere.

These people charge like 3 000 dollars to maneuver a camera that has an automatic setting which works just fine with anyone operating it. Why can't you put 3 000 dollars in a savings account, give it to charity, or buy a midget entourage instead? All of those things make more sense than paying some moron that much money to shoot something he doesn't give a shit about. I'd even venture to say you'd get better photos if your little niece was running around with disposable cameras. At least that'd be original.

But then there are really great wedding photographers that know how to take really artsy shots, thus giving everything that little extra edge, and making your wedding memories extra special. That's not the case, though. Those photographers are simply at a party where they don't know anyone, and they're fucking bored. That's why they're taking stupid photos of hands linked together, flower arrangements, and mirror reflections of rice flying through the air. In fact, if you know anyone who's having a wedding, and doesn't know a single person who can maneuver a digital camera, give me a call and I'll come do it for free. I will eat roadkill before spending that much money on someone who probably just couldn't hack it within the category of photography where he/she initially wanted to place himself.

Other things that have been going through my mind today:

-What are "Oriental flavored noodles" supposed to taste like? The orient?
-It sucks being sick on your last couple of days in New York.
-People who think someone like Adriana Lima is the most beautiful girl in the world. You people are easier to please than puppy dogs.
-I really want to see The Fantastic Mr Fox.

Here are some pictures from the past week or so. It includes Boys Noize, Basement Jaxx, fashion shoots and general randomness. Also, I broke my camera. You won't believe it when I tell you how, it's ridiculous. So, we were waiting for the JMZ at Lorimer Street, a station that is above ground. And by above ground, we're talking 30 feet, at least. Anyway, I was drunk and chewing a piece of gum. When I felt like I was done with the gum, I wanted to spit it out and kick it in the air. I did manage to kick the gum in the air, but as I kicked it, my Yashica T4 slipped out of my pocket, and dropped 30 feet onto the pavement. Boys will be boys, huh?

Once when I lived in Paris, I came home intoxicated and decided to make myself some food. Pasta was the obvious choice, and I must say, I mastered the task beautifully. Until it was time to bring the pot over to the table. I tripped on, what I can only assume was nothing, and subsequently dropped all the pasta on the floor. Now, when faced with a conundrum like the one previously mentioned, there are two main options. The first option is to scoop everything off the floor, ignore the starving children, and throw the food away. I barely even hesitated, before going with option number two. I ate the pasta off the floor. With my hands. This got me thinking, why is it a common connotation that one should wash pasta with cold water after having boiled it with hot water? I've heard that makes the pasta more firm. Does that mean pasta works kind of like testicles, in the sense that it expands in a hot environment, and then shrinks in a cold one, thus making it more firm? Before delving further into this topic, I just want to acknowledge the fact that I just ruined pasta for all of you, by comparing it to a man's scrotum. Sorry, my inquisitive self just gets a bit carried away sometimes.

Actually, I don't think I'm going to investigate the matter further. I just felt like ruining pasta for everyone. Please keep spaghetti in mind while you're gobbling away on those spherical divinities. And vice versa, of course.

My tips for christmas present of the year.

I don't know if you guys have ever encountered this, but in Sweden, we have something called "Christmas present of the year". I guess it pretty much is what it sounds like. It's a collective decision that a certain object will be the best thing to give people for Christmas. Such a concept makes total sense to me. I mean, it's not like everyone likes different things. It's not like people have different needs and interests. So, I found a list of what "Christmas present of the year" has been, ever since 1988. Here are a few that I think are...questionable.

1988 - A Bread Machine: I got you this product to emphasize the fact that you won't ever need this product. Merry Christmas.
1990 - A Wok: It's a frying pan with slightly more elevated sides. Neat.
1993 - Perfume: Christmas present of the year being a slight insult to someone.
1999- The Bible: Jesus Christ. Literally.
2003 - A Warm Hat: The climax of Sweden's most popular holiday should always be a piece of cloth that goes on someone's head. Always. It also has a wide variety of users, including...all people who have heads.
2005 - A set of poker cards and chips: To show you just how unique you are, and how much I appreciate your genuine self, I've decided to give you the lamest thing ever. Call me when you're in debt to someone.
2008 - An experience: This is the part where everyone started handing out oral sex. To their family members.

In the spirit of this great holiday, I've decided to make my own list of five things that I think should be considered for "Christmas present of the year 2009":

-An electronic appliance that turns itself on automatically when you push the ON-button.
-A Trinidad & Tobago flag.
-A T-shirt that says: "I went to Greece. It was pretty cool. I enjoyed it."

I just got back from Washington DC, and even though my computer is pretty much completely broken by now, I managed to upload some new pictures. Also, the Halloween party at our loft on Saturday should be fun. If you want to stop by, it's on 910 Bedford avenue in Brooklyn. Take the G to Bedford-Nostrand, exit onto Bedford and walk along traffic until you get to 910. A visit to the hardware store.

We've started preparations for our annual Halloween party. Right now, I'm working on a giant monster mouth, were the bands/djs will be playing, and to do this, I needed primer. Now, I'm not completely sure what primer does exactly, how much it's supposed to cost, and how much I'd need. Therefore, I decided to go to the hardware store and ask. This little visit made realize how much hardware store personnel reminds me of gym personnel, in the sense that both get really offended when someone walks in, who just doesn't know much about the gym/hardware-related things.

When you're in the hardware store, and you don't know how a certain machine/material works, and you ask, they always roll their eyes, as if you can tell how it works, just from looking at it. I'm sorry, but just because you people live and breathe for these things, it doesn't necessarily make them uncomplicated. I mean, it's not like I just walked in with an orange and asked how I'm supposed to eat it. There are 10 000 different liquids that do one thing, and they always come in as many colors and variations. Therefore, this is what might happen when someone like me visits the hardware store.

-Hello, I need to buy primer, please.
-How much, and what are you using it for?
-Well, I'm painting a monster mouth. I haven't really used primer before, so I'm not sure how much I'll need.
-What do you mean, you haven't really used it? Primer is everywhere.
-Uhm...well I guess I just haven't used it before. I'm not sure what to tell you.
-So, I guess you're not used to fixing things yourself. You know, solving problems and such.
-Listen, as far as I can tell, you run a hardware store. Now, I'm guessing that means you're pretty much depending on people buying things from you. Telling me I'm about as independant as a chimpanzee, does not make me want to give you my money. Quite the opposite.

I'm not dumb. Under main interests, I wouldn't put "shiny things". I just don't know how much primer to buy when I'm building a giant monster mouth for people to party in. I guess my point is, you should come to my party. Not you, hardware store person.

How to know if people will be terrible parents.

I guess all actions might as well be considered maneuvers. Or called maneuvers, at least. I'm fairly certain that your ability to maneuver certain situations, would be a certified way of juding if you are good at life or not. To me, that's what being "cool", or good at life in general, is all about. Always being able to maneuver. It doesn't necessarily mean you can maneuver every single scenario in the world, it simply means you never get yourself into a situation that you can't handle. Makes perfect sense. Always staying on top of things, means you are good at life. Now, some people are not very good at maneuvering, thus they are not very good at life. Why does it feel like those people always have children? Those people should not have children. In fact, there are a number of easy ways to spot people that should never spawn, or shouldn't have spawned any offspring. These are generally horrible parents:

-People who jaywalk with their strollers: This has to be the most egoistic thing one can possibly do. How would you feel if a car came along and hit only your stroller, and not you? You probably wouldn't care, since you're the self-centred anti-christ of parents, but still. From an objective standpoint, that scenario would be unfortunate.
-People who live on Manhattan: It can be hard teaching a child proper moral values, if you've never paid your own rent.
-People who are religious: It can be hard teaching a child proper moral values, if your whole life is dedicated to serving something that might not even exist. And if it does exist, it most likely hates us. Avidly. I guess God can be compared to the cutest girl in school. No matter how hard you try, she doesn't see you. You buy her things, you get into fights over her, you do all her work for her, and she never recognizes your efforts. But somehow, there's a tiny part of you that still thinks you'll get to sleep with her if you try hard enough. That she's just testing you. She's not. She just doesn't like you.
-People who bring their kids to restaurants: Kids do not like restaurants. It really is not that complicated. Just don't bring them places they don't want to be. They'll cause a scene. It's like throwing your dog into a bag of fleas, and then tell him to sit still.
-People who are French: You have been unpleasant for centuries. You're the kid that everyone pretends to like, because he has cool clothes and is not excited about anything.
-People who decide it's a good idea to give Barack Obama the Nobel Peace Prize: Naturally, I have to ask. Where did Barack create peace? Shouldn't a prize be awarded due to result, rather than ambition? Actually, I think we should just give all future olympic gold medals to Germany, because they entered the competition with the intention of winning. Not because they actually won.
-People who have an abortion: Well, duh. Also, it must be horrible being a sperm in that equation. I mean, imagine running a race with like 10 000 other people, and somehow, you miraculously manage to win the entire race. You're number one. Then, after having sprinted for two or three weeks straight, and you've finally reached the finish-line, the main sponsor tells you the race has been terminated.

These people should never be allowed to have their own children. And if they already do, these children should be taken away from them. Right now.

I read about Frida Kahlo on Wikipedia today, and I came across something relatively interesting. I don't know if you've seen Vicky Christina Barcelona, but doesn't this description of Frida Kahlo's marriage, remind you of the relationship between Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansen and Javier Bardem's characters?

"As a young artist, Kahlo approached the Mexican painter, Diego Rivera, whose work she admired, asking him for advice about pursuing art as a career. He recognized her talent and her unique expression as truly special and uniquely Mexican. He encouraged her artistic development and began an intimate relationship with Frida. They were married in 1929, despite the disapproval of Frida's mother.

Their marriage was often tumultuous. Kahlo and Rivera had fiery temperaments and had numerous extramarital affairs. The openly bisexual Kahlo had affairs with both men and women, including Josephine Baker. Rivera knew of and tolerated her relationships with women, but her relationships with men made him jealous. For her part, Kahlo was furious when she learned that Rivera had an affair with her younger sister, Cristina. The couple eventually divorced, but remarried in 1940. Their second marriage was as turbulent as the first. Their living quarters often were separate, although sometimes adjacent. There were frequent lovers between Frida and Diego, such as Leon Trotsky and Dorothy Hale."

Disregarding the fact that Cristina was Kahlo's younger sister, it feels pretty similar.

Remember when Facebook got its own Twitter-function? You know, when people started updating their status more frequently? I really like that function. I like the spontaneity of it, and the fact that you can attach stuff etc. And the best thing, is reading about people's everyday lives, since it really makes me feel like I'm closer to the people I know, even though I don't live in the same city as them anymore. My absolute favorite, is when people write about the different kinds of food they've had during the day. You know, something like:

"X Just finished baking a lemon custard pie for desert, and now it's time to watch some TV!"

Doesn't that make you wish you were there? Doesn't that make you envious? In this very moment, that person gets to indulge in both a tasty dish that's available everywhere, and gets to sit in front of something that everyone has, at the very same time! That really tickles my envy-nerv, I'll tell you that right now. Or what about this good old classic:

"X is now feeling sick from the monstrous salmon-pasta dish that my bestest friend X came over to make, and now it's time to sleep! YUMMY!"

Not only is this person crazy enough to combine food from Norway, with food from Italy, he/she's totally going to bed afterwards! Again, I can't say how envious I am. I would never have the guts to indulge in all those crazy activities. And it might even have been on a weeknight. Oh, such madness!

Please continue with the food-updates, guys! It's not like every single person we know eats food and nobody cares.
